Griffin was recalled to active duty for the Korean War, interrupting his education at Phillips University, Marburg an der Lahn, Germany. He was assigned to the Army of Occupation in Germany, and ultimately to the staff of then-Major General I.D. After basic training, he received counterintelligence training at Fort Holabird, Maryland. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1946.
